Birding or birdwatching is a hobby concerned with the observation and study of birds (the study proper is termed ornithology). The term "birding" is of American origin; "birdwatching" is (or more correctly, was) the commonly used word in the United Kingdom and Ireland and by non-birders in the United States. Since visual observation is routinely complemented with auditory observation, the term "birding" is more accurate, and is growing in usage, particularly among devotees of the hobby.
While you are here, enjoy our stories about our birding adventures and view our photos. You are free to make suggestions, comments and criticisms. Submit your own birding adventures and bird counts. Thank you for stopping by. Happy birding!

Brunswick Golf Club is a challenging and well-conditioned 18-hole gem considered by many to be the best course in mid-coast Maine. The two nines, lovingly maintained by Allan Greenleaf, our highly-regarded Superintendent, offer contrasting styles and dimensions; the front side, designed by Geoff Cornish, is the longer of the two and will test every club in your bag at a par 37. The Stiles/Van Cleek-designed back nine is a shorter par 35, a more open test with plenty of birdie opportunities.

This small Bailey Island summer cabin sits on a ledge only 75 feet from the ocean. The breathtaking sunrise will cleanse the soul. Watch the lobster boats pass just beyond your reach as the local fishermen head out for the days catch. Observe as they haul up their lobster traps right in front of you. Stroll down over the rocks with your fishing pole in hand and try your luck. As you cast out your line wondering what you'll reel in (striped bass, bluefish, mackerel) you'll soon think, ''This is the way life should be''.

Q: Are there limits on how many fish you can catch and how big they are? A: Yes, there are certain restrictions (bag and size limits). For striped bass, a person may take and possess one fish per day. The fish may be between 20 and 26 inches total length, inclusive, or 40 inches or greater in total length. Striper fishing is hook and line only; no gaffing of striped bass is allowed. There are special regulations for the Kennebec region, including the Sheepscot and Androscoggin Rivers and all related bays and tributaries.

Phone: 207-729-4951 There's a story, so I'm told, my friend, of the legend of Captain Mike. He ran aground in Brunswick Town on a cold and stormy night. Mike was not a man compromised he said, he said just what he meant. So he opened a restaurant and made his rules and said "They'll not be bent!" The restaurant's name is Captain Mike's. It's there for all to see. Mike only accepts the freshest fish that ever swam the sea. He cooks and seasons everything and serves it to perfection. Lobsters, clams, and scallops too, a bountiful selection. So when you're looking for the freshest seafood that Maine can offer, my friend, come down to Brunswick Town and join the growing trend. Affordable fresh seafood cooked up just the way you like. And if you're lucky, you just might get a glimpse of good ol'Captain Mike. (Har, Har, Har)

In the early 1900's, the Johnson began as a four-story hotel when access to Bailey Island was via ferryboat. The Johnson Hotel later became a two-story home for Harvey and Lizzie Johnson, and their family of five children. Today, we are proud to continue the Johnson tradition of warmth and hospitality by welcoming guests to an ideal getaway with spectacular views of Casco Bay. As part of our grounds, we invite you to enjoy picturesque Little Harbor, with its pebbly private beach. Many of our guests have experienced the special magic of an early morning sunrise from the east, and on a clear day the White Mountains are plainly visible in the west.

Phone: 207-373-1300 Pedro O'Hara was born in Tabasco, Mexico, the son of a noted Irish chef, who, during the Great Irish Potato famine of 1847, immigrated to Mexico to escape the lack of fresh ingredients for his now famous stews and entrees. During his search for more fertile ground, Pedro's Papa settled into the lovely seaside village of Tabasco, where he fell madly in love with the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Jalapenó farmer. With a steady supply of fresh ingredients and a ready supply of Agavé for his Tequila cravings, Pedro's Papa combined the best of his favorite homeland recipes with those of his new found home to create the wonderfully tantalizing selections that we have on the menu for you today. Pedro's Papa was Knighted for his culinary prowess, and the family tradition continues to this day. Begon & Begorah, Olé & Bon Apetit! Life's Short, Eat well!

MAINE has POISON IVY!!! This Product is available at Lands End Gift Shop I can't thank you enough for the wonderful cure for poison ivy you sent to me. I have been using it now for about 3 years and i can honestly say it really works. My son got poison on his face and I made some sweet fern up and used it on his face and with 24 hours the swelling went down and he could get his eyes open and the itch went away and the next day he said it started to dry up. All the creams they give me will make poison spread on me but when I started using sweet fern I can get rid of it in about 48 hours. Again thank you so much for this wonderful cure."
--Monica from Pennsylvania I had poison ivy on my leg and your product cleared it up in 2 days! THANKS!"
--Fern L. – Maine Thanks for giving my husband the poison ivy cure for me. I was a mess – I had it on my arms, legs, and even in my hair. After putting your product on, it was gone in 36 hours. Thanks again!"
--Deb R. – Maine Saw your product in the health food store and it brought back memories of my grandmother. She always had it on the back of the cookstove for the grandkids to use. It always worked right away."
--Donna R. – Maine Used your great product last weekend. Had been to my doctor twice and it didn't seem to help much. Used poison ivy cure on my legs and arms over the weekend and it was 90% gone! Sure beats the pink liquid. Thanks much."
--Larry W. – Maine Got your poison ivy cure at your workplace as my sister and wife had poison ivy. They used it on Friday night and it was gone by Sunday. Thanks!"
--Roderick S. – Maine

We're located on the wharf at Five Islands, a fishing village on the island of Georgetown, Maine. Five Islands is known as the "prettiest harbor in Maine", and is truly one of the most picturesque spots anywhere on the coast. Our part of Georgetown sits on Sheepscot Bay as it opens up to the Gulf of Maine. The waters are some of the deepest and coldest on the coast which make for the most sought after lobsters anywhere.

A three hour drive from Boston, where downeast Maine sailing begins! We sail around many offshore Islands amid seals, dolphins and maybe a pod of whales, alongside lobstermen hauling their traps in old wooden boats as their grandfathers have! You may sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of sailing Maine's downeast coast, sailing past old lighthouses, offshore Islands and a seal colony during your private sailing adventure. Imagine lounging on deck as you sail past picturesque, rocky islands as waves crash with a thunderous sound.

There are hundreds of thousands of people involved in the lobster industry, in a variety of jobs. In addition to those that fish for lobster, those connected to the industry include everyone from lobster dealers and processors, to bait dealers, boat builders, marine equipment suppliers, restaurateurs -- and even innkeepers, artists and crafters who rely on a successful lobster fishery for their livelihood. Lobstering is more than a successful fishery...it is a cultural icon and a large part of the tourist trade in coastal communities in Northeast.

HMS Bounty...at one with the sea...global voyager...movie star...dedicated to preserving the fine art of square-rigged sailing.
Known for a maritime mutiny that took place over 200 years ago, Bounty remains famous and infamous. Thousands cross her ample decks during port visits wondering what life was like then and now. You know her from her modern movies as well. In 1960, it was Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty. Today, it is Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man's Chest.

When I was a child in Harpswell, Maine, our house was so close to the water that even on a hot summer's day, the air stayed comfortable. Only occasionally, if the sun baking the bayberry leaves in front of the house remained hot enough, and the water still enough with no breeze, would the evening require a change in scenery. On such an evening my parents would say, "Let's drive over to Land's End." For me, this always brought the secret hope that at the gift shop there, my mother would buy me a small silver ring with a dot of turquoise in it. But driving over to Land's End also brought with it a confluence of other feelings, which were hard for me to understand as a child, and are hard for me to understand still, but they had to do with a kind of yearning and anxiety and puzzlement because we were going where the tourists went. BAILEY ISLAND, Maine -- Bailey Island, along with Great Island, Orr's Island, several smaller islands in Casco Bay, and the Harpswell peninsula, belongs to the town of Harpswell, which claims to have more coastal miles than any other community in the nation. Its 217 miles of shoreline sweep along dozens of coves and inlets, jut around promontories, cling to necks of land so narrow that from almost any vantage point you can see water. Among the pleasures of exploring this place are the seaside vistas that appear at almost every turn, and nearly every water view has islands in it.

Two long narrow fingers of land known as Harpswell jut out from Brunswick into Casco Bay. Harpswell consists of three main islands and several hundred small ones. The largest, Sebascodegan (Great Island), Orr's Island, and Bailey Island, are connected by bridges. Between Orr's Island and Bailey Island is the famous cribstone bridge, a unique construction of uncemented granite blocks laid in a honeycomb pattern that allows the tidal waters to flow through.

Plan to replant as soon as humanly possible in a large hole with good composted soil. Give the plant a nice soaking with water, but don't expect much from the plant that year. It will be busy making good roots beneath the soil. Lupines love full sun and well draining soil. Growing lupines is simple. Give the plants plenty of water through August. Aphids love lupines--the best choice is to try and attract ladybugs; otherwise, spray them with a light solution of water, vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. After the flowers have faded, cut off the blooms. This is called "deadheading," something just about every plant needs.

Hundreds of coastal communities depend on the traditional, family-oriented lobster fishery, but scientists and policy makers admit that the biological factors that have sustained this fishery are poorly understood. In recent years, many fisheries have crashed in the Gulf of Maine. To safeguard the lobster fishery from a similar fate, it is imperative to improve biological knowledge of the American lobster and put it to work in fishery and environmental management.

HARPSWELL is bounded on the north by Brunswick ; on the east by the New Meadows River ; and on the south and west by Casco Bay. It consists of a peninsula called Harpswell, or Merriconeag, Neck, which extends southwest from Brunswick into Casco Bay, and of the following islands : Sebascodegan, or Great Island, Orr's, Bailey's, and Haskell's Islands, with Whaleboat Island, Birch Island, and several smaller ones. The area of the Neck is 4,570 acres, and that of Great Island 5,790 acres, according to the measurement made in 1731, by Phinehas Jones, a surveyor.1 The whole town probably contains above 12,000 acres..

Vessels propelled by wind were a great advance over those propelled by the strength of men and animals through the use of oars and paddles. They were faster; they had greater carrying capacity, primarily becasue less space was required for crew or animals and supplies to maintain them; they allowed greater flexibility of design. Perhaps even more important, wind-driven vessels enabled daring and hardy ment ot traverse the entire globe and with them came the romance of sailing vessels, which for a time occupied the economic stage for the entire world.

As you might suspect, Casco Bay Lines ferries aren't really a tourist service. They're the islands' lifeline, carrying groceries, lumber and mail, transporting residents and school children to and from the mainland. They're also the best way we know to see Casco Bay, as the oldest ferry service in America makes its regular daily runs through some of Maine's most beautiful natural scenery.

What We Do The Institute's perspective is fundamentally ecological. It understands that all life is intimately linked with its environment; that people are therefore an inextricable part of the ecosystem of the Gulf of Maine; that there is an interdependent web of existence more evident on islands than in other communities and landscapes. It also recognizes that the maritime culture of islands fundamentally depends on the ecological health and productivity of the surrounding marine environment. To imagine Maine and its islands without a productive lobster fishery, for instance, is like viewing the American prairie without the buffalo.
